Chapter Eight

I had to wonder if any of the rumors were true, and if these people were truly cannibals hunting in the night. Things could go bad really fast if I didn’t take control instantly, so I decided to capture the scout.

I crept forward quickly and quietly, and I absorbed as much information as I could as I went. The bear-eared shifter smelled of the same spices I’d picked up on before, and he had to weigh close to three hundred pounds. He was taller than me, but I was confident I could subdue him easily enough to avoid detection.

Once I was close enough, I snuck up behind the scout, and I wrapped both of my hands around his nose and mouth. I didn’t want to kill the guy, but he instantly began to thrash and fight back.

I began to pull him backward, and we stumbled through the woods in the dark until he ran out of oxygen and passed out. When he fell limp, I was nearly caught beneath his weight, but I managed to step to the side just in time.

It was difficult to drag him the remaining distance to the three women I’d left behind on the trail, but I heaved him up onto my shoulders and carried him like a dead deer.

“Eli!” Willow gasped out as soon as she saw me.

Calantha and Luxe rushed forward to help me with the large shifter, and they didn’t say anything as I wrapped rope around his wrists and ankles. After I secured the lengths together behind his back, the only position he could be in was on his side.

Then I got a better look at the man I had captured.

The man’s fuzzy brown ears matched the thick patch of brown fur sticking out from the neck of his shirt, and each of his arms were the size of my thighs. He wore all black, and beneath the charcoal coating his face, I could see the indentations of several scars.

He looked big and dangerous, and I was breathing hard from the trek through the woods. I finally caught my breath after he was fully restrained, and I ran a hand through my hair as I turned to face the girls.

“I think he’s one of the Night Folk’s scouts,” I explained. “I found him not far from here, so I think they are staying nearby.”

“Did you see anyone else?” Willow asked.

“No,” I admitted. “But where there’s one, there’s bound to be more.”

“Why did you bring him here?” Calantha asked. “Why not just approach him and introduce yourself?”

“What if all the rumors are true, and these people end up actually being cannibals?” I shrugged. “I’d rather find out before rushing in with the most important people in my life with me.”

The three girls let out a collective “aww,” and they turned their attention to our captive.

“Do you think they’re all this big?” Luxe asked as she squatted down near the man’s face.

“I’m not sure,” I said. “Once he wakes up, we can ask him.
